Students receive their own checking accounts and get hands-on lessons about how to handle money responsibly. Through weekly Bank Days at school, they learn saving and budgeting skills that will serve them for a lifetime. Neighborhood financial centers work with elementary schools and parent volunteers in their communities to teach students positive savings habits. How it Works A Financial Center works with a parent organization, like the PTA, to sponsor a School Savings program. Then, once a week on a designated Bank Day, parents and other volunteers assist students with their banking. Bank Day activities usually take place for an hour before school or during a lunch period so students can help run the program. The minimum opening deposit is just 25 cents. If students do not have the initial deposit, WaMu will provide it for them. Students are asked to keep a balance of at least 25 cents in their accounts and to make deposits of at least 10 cents. Deposits are accepted by parent volunteers at the school and then delivered by a parent on behalf of the students to the financial center. Withdrawals can be made at any Washington Mutual financial center. Learning how to bank Students are issued receipts for their deposits and taught how to keep a bank account register. Account statements listing deposits, withdrawals and any interest earned are mailed quarterly. Support materials At the beginning of the year, School Savings volunteers get software to manage the program. School Savers each get a tracking guide. By making deposits and recording them on their tracking guide, School Savers can earn prizes -- everything from a School Savings pencil to a backpack. Students also receive a Savings calendar, a bimonthly newsletter and the Kids' Money Manager, a tool to help them learn about saving and handling money. Literature
