Headquartered in New York City, the financial capital of the world, the department oversees the safety and soundness of New York State-chartered banking organizations. It is charged with monitoring the operations of approximately 500 domestic and foreign banking institutions with aggregate assets of more than $1.3 trillion, and approximately 4,000 other financial entities operating within New York State. In addition to its main office at 1 State Street, Manhattan, the agency also has offices in the state capital in Albany, and in Syracuse, New York.
